Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal data Better Recipes handles, why, and the choices you have. We collect what the service needs to work, we ask before collecting anything optional, and we do not sell your personal data.
Who we are
Better Recipes is provided by Light Pear AS, a Norwegian company (org.nr 935 829 577). We are the data controller for the personal data described here. You can reach us at support@better-recipes.app.
The data we handle
Your account
When you create an account we store your email address, your display name, and, if you choose to add and verify one, your phone number. Sign-in is handled by Auth0 (an Okta service) on a European tenant. Your password is managed by Auth0 and never reaches our servers.
Your recipes and activity
We store the content you create: recipes, photos, tags, ingredients you add, and your favorites. We also record service activity tied to your account, such as which recipes you view, favorite, and rate, and which authors you block. This activity powers features every user sees (trending recipes, discovery ranking, engagement counts) and helps prevent abuse, so it is collected whenever you use the service. The legal basis is the performance of our contract with you, together with our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe.
Your dietary preferences and allergens
You can tell the app which allergens to keep out of the recipes it shows you. That list is kept on your device, and it is sent with your requests so our servers can leave those recipes out of what they return. If an allergen you need is missing from our shared list, you can add your own. Those personal allergens are stored on our servers under your account, they are not added to the shared list other people see, you can delete them at any time, and they go when your account does.
We use both only to filter out what you told us to avoid. Allergy information can say something about your health, so we treat it as sensitive: giving it to us is your choice, the legal basis is your consent, and you withdraw that consent by clearing the list or deleting the allergens you added. We do not use it for advertising and we do not share it. Leaving it empty costs you nothing but the filtering.
Your shopping lists
Shopping lists you build from a recipe, and which items you have ticked off, are stored with your account so they follow you between devices. They are deleted with your account.
Searches
What you search for reaches our servers so we can answer it, and if you have turned analytics on it is included in the events described below. The list of recent searches the app shows you is kept only on your device; we do not keep a search history on your account.
Optional analytics and crash reports
If you consent, we use Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to collect app-usage events, device information, and crash traces. You are asked at first launch and can change your choice at any time in Settings › Privacy & Data. This collection stays off until you agree, and declining does not cost you any features. The legal basis is consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Support
If you email us, we keep the correspondence so we can help you and improve the service.
Advertising
Better Recipes currently shows no advertising, and we do not sell or rent personal data. We do plan to introduce advertising in the app and in a possible web version. Before advertising launches, we will update this policy, and where the law requires consent (such as Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt for ad tracking on iOS) we will ask for it first.
Where your data lives
The service runs on Google Cloud in European data-center regions, and sign-in runs on Auth0's EU region. Supporting infrastructure, such as search and caching, runs with established cloud providers under data-processing agreements. Google and Okta are US companies, so limited processing in the United States can occur; those transfers are covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses.
Camera and photos
The app uses your camera or photo library only when you choose to attach a photo to a recipe. Photos are uploaded and stored with the recipe, and photos on recipes you publish are visible to other users.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data and content until you delete your account, which you can do yourself in Profile › Account Security.
Deleting asks you one question first: whether the recipes you published should go too. Deleting them is the default. If you leave it that way, they are removed with the rest of the account. If you turn it off, those recipes stay on Better Recipes for other people to cook, listed under "[deleted]", with nothing on them that leads back to you. That choice is yours alone, and it is final: once the account is gone you can no longer edit or remove those recipes, and we hold no record connecting them to you.
The rest goes either way. Your profile, favorites, shopping lists, drafts, and private recipes are removed from our live systems, and residual copies are purged from backups within 30 days. A few records outlive the account because they are no longer about you. Reviews you wrote are erased, but the ratings you gave stay with the recipes they were given to, without your name. Ingredients you added stay available to the recipes that use them, no longer attributed to you. Reports you filed about other people's content are kept, because they are moderation records about that content. All three are re-keyed to a one-off identifier created at deletion, which we cannot trace back to you.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask for access to your data, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, a portable copy, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interest or withdraw consent at any time. Most of this you can do directly in the app; for the rest, email us. You can also complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) or your local supervisory authority.
Children
Better Recipes is not directed at children under 13, and you may not create an account if you are under 13.
Cookies and this website
The pages on better-recipes.app currently set no cookies and run no analytics. If that changes, for example with a web version of the app, we will update this policy first and show any consent prompts the law requires.
Changes
We'll post any changes here and update the date above. If a change is material, we'll flag it in the app.
